Pensacola, in a nutshell

It rains like crazy down there
I think its just god barfing up gulf coast water

-KAC, after hearing of my near-death experience on a drive home from bfe last night in a ridiculous storm. This place makes me nauseous sometimes too.

Winter Wonderland

So, I'd much rather be there than 65 degree Florida right now. What's the matter with me? Something to do with knowing that this is likely the scene outside my mom's Des Moines window while she bakes Christmas goodies all day...

Jer's email update said they're at 15" and counting!

really?

So, what milestone do you reach in life where your facebook advertisements feature engorged bellies with stretchmarks? Is it marriage? I protest.

Today I love working from home

You know why? Because I can have little bites of everything in my fridge for lunch. And today, that's leftover stuffing, crab dip, and gruyere mac an cheese. You know it's going to be tasty when everything on your plate is a different shade of beige...

Had a lovely weekend of laziness. Highlights included free scupperberry bread pudding dessert, The Fantastic Mr. Fox, and watching very sad Florida fans at the Pensacola Ale House. I don't know what scupperberries are. I'm a little scared that nothing promising comes up in a google search. Whatever they are, they were grown in the front yard of the old post office/antique shop in Milton. Was I fully aware of this before taking my first bite? Yes. Did I regret it? No.

Oooh, I also made a few of these guys. Cute, easy, and free-ninety-nine.

if I had a million dollars

I would spend it on Christmas decorations. Seriously. Well, at least a couple thousand. I put up my decorations as the Thanksgiving weekend started to wind down and realized that the collection that made my DC apartment cozy and festive leave my current digs a little empty. I could have spent my entire yet-to-be-cut commission check in the Target holiday section, but had to settle for a new tree skirt. I would show you, if I could find the damn cord to my camera, which has been M.I.A. since wedding week. I'll settle for last year's version (do you like the sweet rabbit ears? Looking back, I should have covered them with tinsel...).

It does not, however, smell like Christmas in my house...I finally started staining an endtable my Bob Vila made a month ago, after he informed me I was not pulling my weight in the family furniture making. I blame my lack of focus today on toxic fumes.

i love my mom

So, in the first of what will surely be many phonecalls today as I begin to create my Thanksgiving feast, I ask my mom the secret to her famous cinnamon rolls. Well, not really the secret, because everyone knows that's just covering all surface area with a healthy layer of her equally fabulous homeade frosting. After a minute, I realize that I used white sugar instead of brown on the inside of my rolls. My mom's response: "Don't worry, brown sugar is just dirty sugar anyway". God love her.

A booty-shaking Katie Couric. I especially like this one, with the confused 9 year old looking on...

me: awww i wanna come
i havent painted pottery since the last time we did
KAC: i know - i'm gonna have to bring my ipod since no one will come with me
me: me neither!
me: well, just bring your friends cabernet and chardonnay

KAC: hmmmm good idea!
me: and a framed 8x10 of me too, of course

KAC: what an excellent plan
...i'm gonna take a picture of this crazy scene

my bible for the next week

P-dub's Thanksgiving archive.

So, I'm not as excited as I was last week to cook my very first Thanksgiving meal, as I've realized it's going to be for two people, and may include sauerkraut (for real babe?). I guess the prospect of starting my new family with its own holiday traditions is equal parts exciting and terrifying. As someone who has always defined myself in large part by how I fit into my "old" family, it's hard to move forward without feeling like I'm leaving something behind...

But I probably feel this way because I just got off the phone with my mom. Sigh.

There will, however, definitely be things at my Thanksgiving that would never be at a Lukan one. Like fried turkey. Some changes are less painful than others.

dumb

You know what's fun? Starting a workday in a hotel elevator at 6am and meeting a business contact. Before coffee. And by fun, I mean sucks. He's trying to talk to me about stimulating the minds of gifted kids and all I can think about is getting to the Starbucks for a stimulant. Blessedly, I only had to try and carry my side of this conversation for about 15 minutes and ran away with his card.

Two weeks later, fully caffeinated and ready for followup, I actually read that card--"President and CEO". Sweet start to my morning...

quote that made my day

I find Sarah Palin as refreshing as a bottle of warm Cookie Dough Gatorade on a hot Texas day

Me too. Especially after reading this.

here goes...

At first glance, today was pretty productive. I accomplished a few things I'd put off for an embarrassingly long time, including cleaning my bathroom and starting this blog. Also, made some chocolate chip banana bread, framed a fantastic wedding gift (Brian Andreas print), and checked out Pride and Prejudice from the library.

Sadly, a closer look will tell you that
a. "clean" lasted approximately 5 minutes, as it was haircut day for my skinhead hubby
b. I spent more time searching for pretty templates (I like trees. And rainbows. A lot) than writing my first post.
c. my bread is now less loaf-like, more crumbly mess in a tubberware, since I have no patience when it comes to the combo of chocolate and banana. I call it deconstructed.
d. Storypeople "Kindred Spirits" is sitting facedown on the coffeetable, instead of the wall
e. this will likely be my fourth unsuccessful attempt to read that book that I love so much, in theory.

This doesn't bode well for Monday...
