i love my mom

So, in the first of what will surely be many phonecalls today as I begin to create my Thanksgiving feast, I ask my mom the secret to her famous cinnamon rolls. Well, not really the secret, because everyone knows that's just covering all surface area with a healthy layer of her equally fabulous homeade frosting. After a minute, I realize that I used white sugar instead of brown on the inside of my rolls. My mom's response: "Don't worry, brown sugar is just dirty sugar anyway". God love her.

the dance that made my morning

A booty-shaking Katie Couric. I especially like this one, with the confused 9 year old looking on...

me: haha storypeople of the day
I don't really have any secrets, she told me once. I just forget a lot of stuff.
KAC: haha that one is perfect
i decided that as a form of therapy im gonna take a list of story people quotes with me to all fired up and make my own plates/gifts with them
me: awww i wanna come
i havent painted pottery since the last time we did
KAC: i know - i'm gonna have to bring my ipod since no one will come with me
me: me neither!
me: well, just bring your friends cabernet and chardonnay
they're twins i think
KAC: hmmmm good idea!
me: and a framed 8x10 of me too, of course
and pour me a glass
i'll do the same
KAC: what an excellent plan
...i'm gonna take a picture of this crazy scene
and make sure everyone knows just how crazy we really are
me: as if there was any doubt

my bible for the next week

P-dub's Thanksgiving archive.

So, I'm not as excited as I was last week to cook my very first Thanksgiving meal, as I've realized it's going to be for two people, and may include sauerkraut (for real babe?). I guess the prospect of starting my new family with its own holiday traditions is equal parts exciting and terrifying. As someone who has always defined myself in large part by how I fit into my "old" family, it's hard to move forward without feeling like I'm leaving something behind...

But I probably feel this way because I just got off the phone with my mom. Sigh.

There will, however, definitely be things at my Thanksgiving that would never be at a Lukan one. Like fried turkey. Some changes are less painful than others.

dumb

You know what's fun? Starting a workday in a hotel elevator at 6am and meeting a business contact. Before coffee. And by fun, I mean sucks. He's trying to talk to me about stimulating the minds of gifted kids and all I can think about is getting to the Starbucks for a stimulant. Blessedly, I only had to try and carry my side of this conversation for about 15 minutes and ran away with his card.

Two weeks later, fully caffeinated and ready for followup, I actually read that card--"President and CEO". Sweet start to my morning...

quote that made my day

I find Sarah Palin as refreshing as a bottle of warm Cookie Dough Gatorade on a hot Texas day

Me too. Especially after reading this.

here goes...

At first glance, today was pretty productive. I accomplished a few things I'd put off for an embarrassingly long time, including cleaning my bathroom and starting this blog. Also, made some chocolate chip banana bread, framed a fantastic wedding gift (Brian Andreas print), and checked out Pride and Prejudice from the library.

Sadly, a closer look will tell you that
a. "clean" lasted approximately 5 minutes, as it was haircut day for my skinhead hubby
b. I spent more time searching for pretty templates (I like trees. And rainbows. A lot) than writing my first post.
c. my bread is now less loaf-like, more crumbly mess in a tubberware, since I have no patience when it comes to the combo of chocolate and banana. I call it deconstructed.
d. Storypeople "Kindred Spirits" is sitting facedown on the coffeetable, instead of the wall
e. this will likely be my fourth unsuccessful attempt to read that book that I love so much, in theory.

This doesn't bode well for Monday...
